Youth Photograhic Exhibition (Project 21)
Wed 3rd Feb @ Millenium Court Art Centre - Portadown Project Twenty-One (Outside In) is an innovative, photographic, good relations project whereby 20 young people, aged 16 – 22, from both sides of the religious divide in Portadown came together to work as ‘one group’ to capture and present photographs of what they saw were symbols and images of their respective communities.
The project was delivered in partnership by Goal Line Youth Trust and Craigavon Intercultural Programme. It was funded by the International Fund for Ireland and is managed by the Northern Ireland Rural Development Council (RDC) under The Integrating Communities Programme. Project Twenty-One could not have been realized without the commitment and creativity of the young people involved. Working together, they demonstrated genuine respect for each other and a determination to move towards a shared future with confidence.
The young people were provided with cameras and were guided in their photographic journey by Nick Hutchinson from BNL Productions. The photographs the group have chosen for this exhibition & booklet, document poignant images and provide a lasting record of their journey together. It is hoped that it will raise awareness of the myriad of issues still affecting many today, portray the ironic contradictions vividly displayed in communities, challenge sectarianism and present the aspirations of a new generation. Music & Light Refreshments will be provided |

DEVELOPMENT AND PROJECT FUNDING APPLICATIONS
As you will be aware we have arranged a number of information drop in clinics as outlined below:
Information drop-in clinics have been arranged for interested applicants as follows:
5 January 2010 - City Hotel, Queen's Quay, Derry/Londonderry - 2.00pm-4.30pm
6 January 2010 - Craigavon Civic Centre, Lakeview Road, Craigavon 2pm-4.30pm

While there is a limit on the specific advice we can give in terms of what you might actually say in your application - this has to be very much your decision - we plan to have someone from NICVA attending who will be able to help further.
The fundraising team at NICVA offer bespoke training and guidance with sourcing funding and making successful applications. If you think you would like more information on this aspect please contact the NICVA fundraising team on 028 9087 7777.
Again both we and NICVA will be of much more benefit to you if you arrive prepared to ask specifc questions.

Drummers for Peace in sudam
Snow Patrol's Jonny Quinn leads Northern Ireland drum beat for peace in Sudan
On 9 January 2010, people in Belfast and Derry will join thousands of campaigners around the world gathering to call on world leaders to prevent a return to severe conflict in Sudan. The campaigners will beat out a drum beat for peace in an effort being backed by Snow Patrol drummer, Bangor man Jonny Quinn. The Snow Patrol drummer features in a film which will be shown at the events, featuring drummers from five continents all following a ‘beat for peace’ in Sudan. The effort comes one year before a referendum that will decide the future of Sudan, and falls on the five year anniversary of the Comprehensive Peace Agreement, which ended a 22-year civil war between North and South Sudan. 2009 has seen a serious spike in violence in the South, with 2,500 people killed and 350,000 displaced. In the western region of Darfur – seven years after the conflict erupted – millions continue to suffer daily in camps. Events are planned in capitals from Washington to London, Nairobi to Cairo. They are being organised by a coalition of organisations including Amnesty International and Northern Ireland groups Beyond Skin, SEEDS, Gathering Drum, Releasing Rhythms, Oh Yeah and Cafe Del Mondo The Belfast event is at the Oh Yeah Centre, Gordon Street at 4pm, while the Derry event is at 3pm in Cafe Mondo on Shipquay Street. |

Polish Cultural Week
Polish Cultural Week: A Celebration of Polish Classical Music
Date: Friday 8th May 7pm Venue: St Anne’s Cathedral Belfast
The Polish Cultural Week is returning to Belfast for the third time as a part of the ‘Polska!Year’ with a range of events to share Polish culture, arts, heritage and language in venues across the city in May 2009.
The celebration of the cultural identity and the strengthening of community relations never have been more important. As we are facing the challenges of the global economic downturn, including negative attitudes towards migrant workers and sharp rise in the racially motivated crimes - every effort should be made to develop a better understanding of the benefits of the cultural diversity.
The Polish Cultural Week celebrations provide an excellent opportunity to encourage dialogue and to communicate the benefits of the cultural diversity to the wider community.
As part of Polish Cultural Week and to mark the anniversary of one of Poland’s most famous composers, Frederic Chopin, a free concert of classical music will be held in St Anne’s Cathedral, Belfast on Friday 8th May at 7pm, performed by the Varsovia piano trio.

The Polish Cultural Week is returning to Belfast for the third time as a part of the ‘Polska!Year’ with a range of events to share Polish culture, arts, heritage and language. The programme for the ‘Polska! Year’, developed by the Adam Mickiewicz Institute in Warsaw on behalf of the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage and supported by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs covers over 300 events in the most renowned and recognized concert halls, museums and galleries in cities including London, Edinburgh, Canterbury, Leeds, Liverpool, Oxford, Birmingham, Glasgow, Dundee, Norwich and of course Belfast.
There will be exhibitions, concerts, workshops and film screenings in venues including Linen Hall Library, Ormeau Baths Gallery, GT Gallery, PS2 Gallery, The Place, QFT and many more. Detailed programme of the Week will be announced during the media launch on the 27th March 2009, attended by the Polish Ambassador.
The aim of the Polish Cultural Week is to promote Polish culture and to deliver a strong cultural experience, in order to contribute to the social well being of the wider community, to develop a sense of identity among the members of the Polish community in Northern Ireland and to create effective partnerships to ensure a sustainable cultural activity.
The Polish Cultural Week celebrations provide an excellent opportunity to encourage dialogue and to communicate the benefits of cultural diversity. Therefore we would like to reach out to people from different traditions and backgrounds via business, arts, community and voluntary organizations across Northern Ireland.
Should you be interested in organizing or supporting an event during the Polish Cultural Week, you can email eva@connectni.co.uk or telephone 02893364400. |

Launch of CIP Support Service - Portadown Times Article
Knowing difference between diversity and division the key
With the local immigrant population now numbering in excess of 6,000, Craigavon Intercultural Programme (CIP) is playing an increasingly important role in helping newcomers settle here. A new departure has seen the launch of a publication entitled Connect, which describes itself as being ‘a practical newsletter and E-bulletin with the aim of providing information about events and issues raised by new communities in the Craigavon area’. In addition, a support service has just been set up. Offering ‘a free, comprehensive and confidential service’, the promise is that if they are ‘unable to assist with more complex issues, we will signpost you to a relevant service’. It’s both necessary and reassuring for people living far from home. CIP itself is made up of the Lithuanian Community Group, the Polish Community Group, the Lithuanian Saturday School, the Polish Extended School, the Filipino Support Network, the Indian Community Group and the Craigavon Alliance of Portuguese Speakers. That gives some indication of the cultural and ethnic diversity. In fact, the mixture is even greater than this make-up suggests. Take the Ethnic Women’s Group for example; it has 15 nationalities. Some 28 languages are spoken in Craigavon nowadays, for which reason it is imperative that newcomers have a clear and structured network within which they can seek help, receive advice and have things explained in their own language. Stephen Smith chairs CIP and his wife, Hetty, is co-ordinator of the Ethnic Women’s Group. They know what it’s like to be living and working abroad, having spent 20 years in Portugal where they served as missionaries. The recently-launched CIP support service has four part-time workers whose calibre is highlighted by their credentials. Rimgaugas Pazusis, who is from Lithuania, has a degree in mechanical engineering; Gabriela Strzelec has a Masters in sociology; Pole, Wojciech Dylewicz - who came to Ireland three-and-a-half years ago - graduated in psychology in his native land. So, clever people with much to offer. Wojciech admits to having found the adjustment to a new country and culture difficult at the outset. “When I arrived I didn’t know how things were done here,” he says. “At the start my hope was that I would improve my English as I knew that would be useful for my career as a psychologist. “In Poland I found it impossible to get a properly paid job in psychology because they kept telling me I didn’t have experience. That was very frustrating. So I came here to get more experience.” He worked as a volunteer in a Dublin call centre which offered help and support to immigrants and ethnic groups. He also worked with Praxis, the organisation which exists to advise and support ‘displaced people’. “I really enjoyed that,” he says. “And I trained in caring for people with Alzheimers, which was good for me.” He points out that he and fellow-Poles “can earn more money in a short time than we could at home”. “I’m not talking about a job in our proper professions,” he says. “I’ve worked as a postman, for example. Others, with degrees, are doing all sorts of jobs just to make money as quickly as they can. They can get more here than back in Poland, which is why they come.” Asked if he would advise fellow-Poles to follow his example, he replies, “I’m not sure. For some it would be good, yes. For others, maybe not. They can come here and learn about life in a difficult culture, which is good. I’m glad I have had that experience. “But the danger is that you lose contact with your profession. If you stay in Poland and work - even as a volunteer - in the field you’ve trained in, at least that means you remain within your proper profession. He continues, “Maybe it works best if you come here for a particular period. Work hard, save as much as you can in that time and then go back when you have achieved the target. “The good thing about living in a different country is that you learn many new customs and sample another culture. That opens immigrants’ minds and helps them to expand their knowledge. You see how something like the National Health System works. You see how organisations run. You discover that the back-up and support services here are bigger, better and stronger than in Poland. So you learn about possible solutions to problems. “All of that is good and I have learnt a lot from seeing these things. And from my involvement with Praxis and the Alzheimers Society, even as a volunteer. “But you are away from your family and friends. You miss them. And it takes time to get used to the weather here. In fact, I don’t know if you could ever get used to that!” Wojciech also says he would encourage others in his situation to take every opportunity to integrate and assimilate. “I would tell them to get involved with the wider community, not just those like themselves,” he explains. “Participate in local events. Join sports clubs. Go out and mix with others. Take every opportunity to meet with locals and get to know them. That way you will learn how things are done here.” |

CIP Ethnic League
This year’s CIP Ethnic Football League took place at Kernan Playing Fields in Craigavon. During the month of July eight teams took part in a series of playoffs between footballers from members of various nations who reside in the Craigavon area.
The 11 a side teams were drawn from Polish, Lithuanian, Portuguese, Brazilian, East Timorese, African, Bulgarian migrant workers and members of the local population who represented Ireland. The games were disputed in a friendly manner and were appreciated by both players; their families and supporters, who came out to enjoy the games, but more especially to encourage their countrymen to victory. The Polish and Brazilian teams proceeded to a much contended final. At half time Poland lead by 3 to 1.However, Brazil made a remarkable comeback in the second half scoring two goals in quick succession but was unable to withstand the Polish onslaught who took home the Community Cup by 4 goals to 3.
Besides providing an opportunity for migrant workers to enjoy participating in a soccer event it allowed players to showcase their skills which did not go unnoticed by local scouts - a number of the migrant players have now been contracted by local clubs in the Craigavon area.
The league was supported by Community Foundation N.I.

Intercultural Events to Celebrate Diversity
09.05;2008 Portadown Times Craigavon Intercultural Programme (CIP) organised several events to celebrate Community Relation’s Week and the consensus was that these were a huge success.
The events, which were held in several locations across Craigavon, attracted over 500 participants from a variety of countries and cultures. Stephen Smith, chairman of CIP, said that he was “delighted with the response”, adding that he is “confident the experiences will assist the integration of new communities into local life”.
Portadown Town Hall was the venue for festival of music which celebrated the various cultures represented by the local Portuguese-speaking community. The audience, which exceeded 250, was entertained by a variety of singers and groups from Brazil, East Timor, Cabo Verde and Portugal, providing the Portuguese speakers and local people who watched them with a unique cultural insight into a diverse language group. The highlight of the evening was participation of Portuguese children who attend local schools. The event, organised by CIP and the newly-formed Craigavon Alliance of Portuguese Speakers, was supported by the Community Relations Council.
Women’s World – a multicultural support group which meet each Thursday morning in the Portadown Baptist Church hall – also celebrated last week. The group, which has been in existence since April 2007, offers a befriending and information service to women from the migrant communities. Commenting on its work, Women’s Co-ordinator, Hetty Smith said, “Women’s World has directly helped over 100 women from 15 different nationalities and has proved to be an ideal way for migrant women to interact with local women , improved their English, presented their own skills and has opened the door to improved integration.”
Over 70 ladies attended the anniversary session at which reports were presented, with Hetty using the occasion to highlight the fact that a second Women’s world group has been set up in Lurgan where it meets on Tuesday mornings in the Jethro Centre. Visitors were treated an international food testing experience courtesy of the Women’s World ladies.
Then on Saturday, Brownlow Leisure Centre hosted the second intercultural sports day, an event sponsored by Craigavon Borough Council. The event drew together several agencies – the Southern Health and Social Care Trust, Brownlow Sports Trust and the PSNI – each of which provided information of use to the participating communities. Brazil, Poland and Bulgaria presented their own adult football teams, while local young people played off against a Portuguese side. Women were offered aerobics while children participated in craftwork and group games to the sounds of the intercultural musical group, `Motion Project`. Basketball was the chosen activity of the Lithuanian and Filipino communities. That was no surprise; it is, after all, the national sport of both.
Stephen Smith said, “I believe these events provide an ideal opportunity for people from various communities to get know each other better, form new friendships and introduce the new communities to sporting opportunities.”
“One of the positive results from last year’s event was the creation of the Craigavon Lithuanian basketball team and we hope that other groups will follow their example and become more involved in the local sporting scene.”

Portadown FC Opens Gates to Community
05.08.07 Portugal & Poland in action against Portadown
The feedback from Saturday has been extremely positive particularly from the visitors and the Irish Football Association.
From the view point of the Craigavon Intercultural programme the open day was certainly a great success, said CIP’s chairman Stephen Smith, ‘The players and supporters connected to the Portugal and Poland teams certainly enjoyed the occasion and we would be keen to build on that friendship. It is vital that the ethnic communities become more involved in local life and events such this both showcase their talents and opens the door to participation in the local football scene’
Portadown FC would like to thank the following, The Southern Trust, PSNI, Craigavon Borough Council Community Network Craigavon. Arts Council of Northern Ireland and NICEM, the Mayor of Craigavon, Councillor Robert Smith, Upper Bann MP, David Simpson, Craigavon Intercultural Programme, Yogies’s Party Bus, William Lappin, Creation Ministries and everyone who helped to support the open day

Community Sports and Fun Day
Community Sport’s & Fun Day
May 2007
Brownlow Leisure Centre was the venue for a Community Sports and Fun day designed to introduce migrant workers and their families to the complex. Families from an extensive range of cultures and languages participated in a variety of sports activities. While footballers from Poland, Brazil, Portugal and East Timor went face to face alongside their local counterparts on the outdoor pitch, basketball teams from Lithuania and the Fhilipines, cheered on by their supporters, played a very competitive game indoors.
The event was organised by Craigavon Intercultural Programme, a group set up to assist the migrant communities resident in the Craigavon area. Stephen Smith chairman of CIP stated that the event had been a tremendous success. He said, ‘Today’s event was the climax to a seven week football league and we wanted to do offer player’s families an opportunity to be together while also introducing everyone to a variety of sport’s activities we are planning for the autumn and winter’
The ladies were not forgotten in the two hour sport marathon. Sandra Pereira, a Portuguese aerobic trainer put a group of young Portuguese mothers through their paces while their children enjoyed craftwork and face painting in an enjoining room. Gracinda, one of the mothers said, ‘It’s been a great day and we now want to form our own aerobic group’
A local junior Gaelic team demonstated the skills of the game and their hurling expertise
drew the attention of the foreign nationals, who were new to these games. Opportunities to engage in Badminton and Volleyball were also given by coaches arranged by Kevin Gamble, the Sports Coordinator of Brownlow, whose staff did a fine job in directing all the sports activities.
Besides the fun and games staff, from the Southern HSC Trust partnered with Craigavon Intercultural Programme to provide health information and advice on a range of issues, including, registration with GPs. blood pressure and stress management. Lecile Lennon, from the Community Development team said, ‘the event has given us an excellent opportunity to both offer advice and promote healthy living. It has been very successful’
The PSNI were represented by Sergeant Hood from the Community Safety team, who interacted with the sports teams and offered advice on a range of public safety issues. The mayor of Craigavon, Cons Robert Smith, joined by a number of officials from Craigavon Borough Council spoke to representatives from the various communities and welcomed them to the area. A special welcome was given to Mrs Cecilia Whiteside, the Portuguese Consul in N.Ireland, who came especially to meet members of the Portuguese community. Mrs Whiteside, said, ‘I’ve enjoyed meeting people from so many different parts of the world and I’ve had a great day.
